Defunensemble jatkaa keväällä 2023 alkanutta yhteistyötään säveltäjä-äänitaiteilija Nyokabi Kariũkin kanssa. Konsertissa kuullaan yhdessä säveltäjän kanssa workshopattua materiaalia joka yhdistyy Kariũkin jo aikaisemmin julkaistuun ja tulevan uuden levyn ohjelmistoon.

Nyokabi Kariũki & defunensemble – REUNION
Defunensemble continues its collaboration with Kenyan composer and sound artist Nyokabi Kariũki, which began in spring 2023. The concert will feature material workshopped together with the composer and combined with Kariũki’s previously released and upcoming new album repertoire.

Nyokabi Kariũki (she/her) is a Kenyan composer, sound artist and performer. Her sonic imagination is ever-evolving, spanning across various genres from classical contemporary to experimental electronic music, explorations in sound art, pop, film, (East) African musical traditions and more. She performs with the piano, voice, electronics, and on several instruments from the African continent — particularly on kalimbas and the mbira. Nyokabi’s work, going from her acclaimed EP peace places: kenyan memories (SA Recordings) to her debut album FEELING BODY (cmntx records), have been described as “deft” (The Quietus) and “transcendent” (The Guardian), with Bandcamp highlighting seeing her as “becoming a crucial voice in contemporary composition and experimental music.” She seeks to create meaningful and challenging art, illuminated by a commitment to the preservation and reflection on African thought, language and stories.

Vuonna 2009 perustettu defunensemble on yksi suomalaisen nykymusiikin menestystarinoista . Nopeasti uusiin suuntiin kehittyvän musiikkielämän tarpeisiin vastatakseen defunensemble keskittyy elektroakustisen musiikin systemaattiseen ja ammattimaiseen esittämiseen, kehittämiseen ja tilaamiseen.
Defunensemblen muodostavat nykymusiikkiin erikoistuneet ja urallaan menestyneet muusikot ja ääniteknikot huilisti Hanna Kinnunen, klarinetisti Mikko Raasakka, pianisti Emil Holmström, sellisti Markus Hohti ja ääniteknikot Timo Kurkikangas ja Anders Pohjola sekä taiteellinen johtaja säveltäjä Sami Kleemola. Yhtyeen käsissä niin varhaiset analogiset klassikot kuin kaikkein uusimmatkin digitaaliset innovaatiot saavat elämän. Katu-uskottavilla, lukuisiin eri sähköä hyödyntävien kokeellisen musiikin alagenreihin ennakkoluulottomasti kurkottavilla projekteillaan yhtye on voittanut puolelleen hyvin erilaisia yleisöjä niin kotimaassa kuin kansainvälisestikin.

Founded in 2009, defunensemble is one of the success stories of Finnish contemporary music.To meet the needs of a rapidly evolving music scene, defunensemble focuses on the systematic and professional performance, development and commissioning of electroacoustic music.
Defunensemble consists of musicians and sound technicians specialising in contemporary music with successful careers: flutist Hanna Kinnunen, clarinetist Mikko Raasakka, pianist Emil Holmström, cellist Markus Hohti, sound technicians Timo Kurkikangas and Anders Pohjola and artistic director composer Sami Kleemola. The ensemble brings to life early analogue classics as well as the most recent digital innovations. With their street-credible projects, which open-mindedly reach into numerous different sub-genres of experimental music using electricity, the band has won over a wide range of audiences both in Finland and internationally.
