Näyttely: The Ban Factor / Sexy monsters & early erotica

The Ban Factor

On 1962 July 27, the front pages of newspapers in Rangoon, Myanmar, mentioned the official announcement for the state’s ban on supernatural, witchcraft-plotted and ghost films. The film posters, handbills and positive stills that are displayed in this exhibition include films that are banned completely or have plots that have been first heavily censored because of the horrific and/or supernatural content.

Sexy monsters & early erotica

Sexy monsters live in the peculiarly twisted universe of Toshio Saeki’s art. Toshio Saeki (佐伯俊男, 1945 – 2019) was a Japanese illustrator and painter, known for his erotic works. Yōkai (妖怪) means supernatural spirit beings or demons in Japanese folklore.

The collection of early erotica contains erotic photographs, lithographies and paintings from the first half of the 20th century. These images were mostly traded and sold in strict secrecy, in the era when their public exhibition was still considered obscene or immoral, and often also illegal.

Also on display: ceramic sculptures by Tomi Malkki!
