Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers. Industrial Light and Magicilla työskennelleen Phil Tippettin stop motion -tehostesaavutukset suurelokuvissa ovat kaikille tuttuja. Vaikka teosten hirviöistä tuli ikimuistoisia, stop motioniin erikoistunut Oscar-voittaja oli aina kahlittu kolmansien osapuolien visioiden toteuttajaksi.
Mad God on Tippettin täysin oma projekti, jota on tehty 30 vuoden ajan. Mestari valottaa sen kautta alitajuntaansa, joka onkin hätkähdyttävän synkkä ja kieroutunut; ennemmin Clive Barkerin Hellraiseria kuin Tim Burtonia. Tai Ray Harryhausenia, mutta cronenbergiläisittäin häiritsevän orgaanisena. Myös Hieronymus Bosch nyökkäilisi tyytyväisenä, jos tämän näkisi.
Tippett työryhmineen on animoinut yksityiskohtaisen maailman, jossa sotilasasuinen salamurhaaja lasketaan kapselilla syvälle varjoisiin luoliin ja raunioihin. Siellä hän vaeltaa läpi sodan sekä hulluuden suorittamassa tehtäväänsä ja kohtaa näkyjä, joiden toteuttaminen olisi mahdotonta näyteltynä ja kliinisen persoonatonta cgi:nä. Uhrauksia, mystisiä koneistoja, kyseenalaisia lääketieteellisiä operaatioita, kärsivien otusten olemassaolon taistelua – kaikki on dramaattisessa valossa kylpevää, käsin tehtyä nukkeanimaatiota. Kaavaa on mukana rikkomassa muutama ihmisnäyttelijä, kuten kulttiohjaajanakin kunnostautunut Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid and Nancy).
Fantastisuus huokuu Mad Godin jokaisesta kuvasta ja äänestä. Samalla herää pohjaton uteliaisuus: mitä ihmettä Tippettillä voikaan vielä olla mielessään. Tällainen groteski trippi on luonnollisesti tehokkaimmillaan, jos sille altistuu teatterin kankaalta.
